Compostable stand up pouches are worth evaluating when the proposed structure protects your product and customers have access to the stated composting route. Check both before placing an order. A compostability claim does not establish shelf life, seal reliability or acceptance by a local collection program.
Ask what evidence covers the finished printed pouch. Film, ink, adhesive, zipper and valve are all part of the specification you need to assess.
What does “compostable” mean for a stand up pouch? It describes breakdown under defined composting conditions. The claimed conditions and certification scope matter. A statement about a raw material is not necessarily evidence for a finished bag.
BPI explains its compostability certification and certification schemes . Check which scheme applies to the exact pouch being offered and which disposal conditions it covers. Keep a copy of the current supporting documents with your packaging specification.
Can a commercially compostable pouch go into a home compost bin? A commercial compostability claim alone does not establish home compostability. Home composting needs supporting evidence for that condition.
Collection also matters. The EPA’s plastic recycling and composting FAQ advises checking local acceptance of compostable plastics. Its home composting guidance is a separate reference for household composting. Do not assume every compost site accepts every certified package.
Before choosing a compostable stand up pouch, identify where it will be sold and how customers are expected to dispose of it. That gives you a practical basis for the instructions on the pack.
Does a brown kraft pouch prove compostability? No. Kraft describes a paper layer or appearance. Other films, coatings, inks, adhesives and accessories can be present.
Search the BPI certified product catalog when BPI certification is claimed. Match the listed product and scope to the proposed specification; a similar photograph or material name is not enough. BPI’s certification preparation information also shows why product details matter.
This photo shows a kraft exterior. It does not establish compostability certification for the pictured pouch. Can I print a compostability logo on my custom pouch? Confirm that the finished product is covered and that the proposed use of the mark is authorized. Changing the print or construction may require checking the scope again.
BPI provides sublicensing information for relevant arrangements. Ask the certification body or certified supplier what applies to your product. Do not approve a logo simply because the underlying film has a certificate.
Can compostable pouches have a zipper or valve? Suitable components may be available, but adding one does not automatically certify the complete pouch. Check the closure, valve, film and printed construction together.
Fresh-Lock makes this distinction in its compostable zipper information . Use it as a component reference, not as evidence for an Illusionpack pouch. Our feature guide explains how accessories affect opening, filling and bag layout.
Will my product keep the same shelf life after the switch? You need to validate that with your product. Compare the proposed structure with your current packaging under the storage and distribution conditions you expect.
Request oxygen and moisture transmission data where relevant. AMETEK MOCON explains barrier test methods and water vapor transmission testing . Compare equivalent test conditions, then assess the filled pouch. A film result alone does not cover every seal and accessory.
Review our material options and pouch material selection guide to prepare the brief. For coffee packaging , include aroma protection, gas release and the time between roasting and packing.
Will it seal on the equipment I already use? Check it in a trial. A different inner layer can need different temperature, pressure and dwell-time settings. Agree a starting sealing range with the supplier rather than assuming your existing settings will transfer.
Fill the bag with the intended product and check whether powder, oil or crumbs enter the seal area. Include enough clearance to close the pouch without forcing the contents into that area. The size guide explains why usable capacity differs from the outside dimensions.
Request samples for the trial. Check the seal, closure, standing stability and product condition before approving a printed run.
Should I choose recyclable packaging instead? Compare the intended disposal routes as well as the product requirements. Compostable and recyclable describe different routes; neither label by itself tells you what local facilities accept.
Our recyclable packaging overview can help frame the alternative. Discuss the full construction of your custom stand up pouch before choosing either claim.
What should I send with a compostable pouch enquiry? Send the product, fill weight and volume, target shelf life, filling conditions, destination market and accessories. State whether you are asking about commercial or home composting and request evidence for the finished specification.
Use the wholesale pouch buying guide to organize the quotation, or send the packaging brief to Illusionpack . Confirm availability and documentation for the proposed construction before making a claim on your artwork.
What other compostable pouch questions should I check? Does “biobased” mean compostable? No. The source of a material and its disposal behavior are different questions. Ask for evidence supporting the specific claim you plan to use.
Can compostable pouches go in the plastic recycling bin? Follow the instructions for the exact package and your local collection program. Do not assume it belongs in a plastic recycling stream.
